air defense identification zone (ADIZ)

an area beyond a country’s sovereign airspace in which all aerial vehicles must be identified and can be intercepted before reaching the country’s territory. These zones aim to provide a country with warning should hostile aircraft approach its airspace. However, they are unregulated at the international level and not necessarily recognized by other states.
