influenza
a contagious viral respiratory infection, commonly known as the flu. In severe cases, flu can be life-threatening. Seasonal occurrences of the flu are partly preventable by vaccination. In other cases, such as in 1918 and 2009, flu can result in a high volume of fatalities before being brought under control.
