Korean War

a 1950–1953 war fought between North Korea (supported by the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China) and South Korea (supported by the United Nations, the United States, and the British Commonwealth). The war began when communist North Korean forces invaded South Korea with the approval of the Soviet Union in an attempt to unify the Korean peninsula after its 1945 division at the end of World War II. After three years of fighting, the Korean Armistice Agreement, signed on July 27, 1953, enforced a total cease-fire between military forces while establishing the Korean Demilitarized Zone as a geographical buffer and de facto border between North and South Korea. The Korean War was the first proxy war that highlighted the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union in the Cold War era.
