land for peace

a formula for the resolution of disputes between Israel and its Arab neighbors that was first outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 of 1967. The resolution called for “withdrawal of Israel armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict [the Six Day War]” as well as “termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries.” In this way, Israel would cede land in exchange for peaceful relations with its neighbors. The formula remains a potential basis for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
