Maastricht Treaty

the 1992 agreement that created the modern European Union (EU) out of the European Economic Community, continuing the post–World War II trend of political and economic integration in Europe. Among other provisions, the treaty introduced the notion of EU citizenship; a central banking system; and a common currency, the euro, whose adopters were theoretically required to adhere to certain economic standards.
