Salafism
a fundamentalist movement of Sunni Islam emphasizing a literal reading of both the Quran and the words of the prophet Mohammed. Salafism, which came to Nigeria in the 1960s, typically supports the restoration of sharia at the expense of secularism, and this philosophy fostered the establishment of Boko Haram.
