San Francisco Peace Treaty
a treaty signed by Japan and the World War II Allied powers, including the United States, on September 8, 1951. It ended the state of war between the Allies and Japan and restored Japan’s sovereignty over its territory. It also contained provisions for the continued presence of U.S. military forces in Japan, for trade and other economic relations, and for the treatment of Japanese convicted in military tribunals. The treaty came into force on April 28, 1952.
