territorial zone

as defined in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, an extension of a country’s sovereignty for twelve nautical miles from its coastal baseline; also known as territorial waters or territorial sea. China has claimed a territorial zone around artificial islands it has built in the South China Sea, a move the United States has opposed by sending military forces within twelve miles of them.
