armistice

a formal agreement by warring parties to stop fighting for an agreed upon period, or sometimes indefinitely. An armistice is not a peace-treaty, but it can stop hostilities while warring parties attempt to negotiate a full peace agreement. In some instances, such as at the end of the Korean War in 1953, an armistice can be signed without leading to a formal peace treaty, leaving those who signed it technically still at war.
