Frequently Asked Questions About Registration

How do I add students to my simulation?

To add students to a simulation, click on the plus sign icon on the right-hand side of the "Manage Class" tab. From there, there are four ways to add students to a simulation:

  1. Student Self-Registration: Each simulation has a registration code paired with it. You can share this code with students, who can use it to register for your simulation themselves by going to the site’s homepage and clicking “log in,” and then “student” to get to the student account creation page. Your student will have to input their name, email, password, and simulation code (that you provided them) to create an account and enter your simulation. Students will then receive a follow up email thanking them for registering for Model Diplomacy and asking them to click a link to confirm their registration. It is important that students click the link to validate their accounts, otherwise they will be unable to access their accounts.

  2. Individual Invitations: You can invite individual students by entering their email addresses into the "Invite Student(s)" section and clicking the "add students" button. You can invite multiple students this way by separating their email addresses with commas. Once added, students will receive an email inviting them to your simulation and asking them to click a link that will take them to a page to register for a Model Diplomacy account. After filling out the registration page, students will receive a follow up email thanking them for registering for Model Diplomacy and asking them to click a link to confirm their registration. It is important that students click the link to validate their accounts, otherwise they will be unable to access their accounts.

  3. Bulk Invitations: If you want to invite a large number of students, you can do so by uploading a CSV file containing students' first names, last names, and email addresses. To do this, click the "Choose File" button, selecting the file you wish to upload, and clicking the "import" button. In order to add students, the CSV file must be formatted properly. A sample CSV file is available here, as well as below the CSV upload bar in the "Manage Class" tab. It is highly recommended that you double check there are no additional spaces in the file and no typos.

  4. Previous Class Invitation: If you have already run a simulation with a class, and would like to invite the same class to a new simulation, you can select your class name from the drop-down menu in the "manage class" tab and then click the "copy students" button. If your class has changed since the last simulation, you can still add additional students using one of the methods above, or delete students after you have used the “copy students” tool.

Note: Please do not invite yourself to the simulation. Including your own email address in the simulation will cause an error and disrupt the invitation process for students.

What should I do if students are unable to log in because their usernames have not been activated or are blocked?

When a new user creates a Model Diplomacy account, they receive a follow-up validation email containing a link that must be clicked to finalize their account creation. If they do not click this link, their account remains blocked and the user cannot access their materials. If a student cannot find their confirmation email, their instructor can re-send it through the "Manage Class" tab.

If your students continue to be unable to log in, contact [email protected] and the Model Diplomacy team can assist you.

How do I add assigned roles to my newly invited students?

Once you successfully invite your students, their names will automatically show up in a list below the “Manage Class” invite section. Each name will have an “assigned role” box that will default to “General Advisor to the President” in an NSC simulation or “Customized Role” in a UNSC simulation. To change a student’s role, click on the paper and pencil icon at the bottom right of the box and pick the preferred student role to assign from the drop-down list. Students will be notified of their role the next time they log on to their account.

Why can’t I change my simulation’s registration code?

For security purposes, each simulation is assigned a unique, random registration code that cannot be changed. This is to ensure that only students who have a simulation’s specific code can register.

Can two instructors manage a simulation?

Only one instructor account can create and manage a simulation on our website. If you are co-managing a simulation, we recommend you share log-in information so that both instructors can interact with students’ work online.

Where is my confirmation email?

We have noticed sometimes that confirmation emails from Model Diplomacy will be filtered into a spam or promotions folder in your inbox. If you have a student who cannot find their confirmation email, you can ask them to check their spam or promotions folder or you can re-send them a confirmation email by going into the “Manage Class” section of your simulation and clicking the orange “Re-send Confirmation” button under the student’s name you would like to send it to.
